Synopsis: “Better than Life” is a heartfelt documentary narrating the life and struggles of Syros Puorlatifi, a proficient game developer in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Despite his expertise and work with international video game companies, economic sanctions hinder him from receiving payment, making daily life increasingly difficult. Determined to seek better opportunities abroad, Syros embarks on a journey in search of new horizons, allowing us to see video games from a developer’s perspective.
Director Statement: My earliest memory involves a video game controller in my hands, providing an escape into a world without consequences. Video games have been a significant part of the 80th and 90th generations worldwide. In directing this documentary, I sought to emulate the style of video games, simulating their experience and merging them with reality. From the start menu to loading sequences, we employ video game camera styles like “top-down,” “first-person,” and “third-person” to illustrate real life as if it were a video game, where every aspect could be enhanced. Additionally, the film delves into the reasons motivating the young generation to consider immigration as a viable option.
